Ultra Rare Carl Zeiss Jena Dekaris 10x50 1937 Imported by Chinese Army & Marked
Here we have an ultra rare pair of Carl Zeiss Jena Dekaris 10x50 binoculars (1761093) this pair was made in 1937 (confirmed by Zeiss), at this time the Chinese military were importing their optical equipment from Germany. This pair is in a military case with the rear belt loop and swivel strap holders, the binoculars and case are marked in Chinese with the name of Zeiss and Made in Germany. In 1937 China was invaded by the Imperial Japanese Army and all forms of military equipment was urgently needed by the Chinese military. How these binoculars came to be in the UK is difficult to find but one possible explanation could be that they were taken from a Chinese Officer by a Japanese one and then by a British Officer. In 30 years of collecting military items i have never seen a pair of these binoculars just very occasionally heard about a pair in someones collection, I only collect WW1 now so it is typical that I come across a pair, so someones in luck.
Condition: The binoculars are in fine condition for their age, the lenses look to be unmarked but in need of cleaning, the individual eye focus is firm but not too tight or loose. The frame is in good order with just wear to the black enamel coating showing the brass and metal frame underneath but this is only wear not abuse. The case is in fair order with the marks and scrapes that would be expected of a military case. The front clip has one of the springs missing, one of the swivel strap holder has been re riveted at what looks like some time in the distant past, possibly a battlefield repair The lid and hinge are in good order.
